MSc in Blockchain (Distributed Ledger Technologies)

Linking digital innovation to business success

Are you looking to bridge skills gaps, gain the knowledge and development skills necessary to excel in the fast-growing field of blockchain? Look no further than our co-funded Masters in Blockchain, delivered through the School of Computing at DCU.

As blockchain grows in popularity this technology has the potential to revolutionize industries ranging from finance to healthcare to manufacturing. With real-world business applications that range from data protection and security to cost efficiencies and transparency, blockchain is in high demand and blockchain specialists are needed now more than ever.

Designed to give ambitious technologists hands-on experience in all the latest blockchain technologies, this Masters in Blockchain helps prepare you to take on the most challenging projects and contribute to developing this revolutionary technology.

The fees for this programme are part-funded by Technology Ireland ICT Skillnet.

The MSc in Blockchain programme is designed to fit your busy schedule with asynchronous part-time online delivery over two years.

Modules and Practicum

You’ll take eight core modules and complete a Blockchain practicum in the second year, which accounts for one-third of the marks for the award of the Masters Degree. During this practicum, you’ll have the opportunity to apply your knowledge to a real-world problem, or analyse blockchain subsystems and propose improvements. You may develop prototype Blockchain software systems, which could be sponsored by external clients or involve your own ideas.

The projects, which may be sponsored by external clients or involve some of students’ own ideas, will typically require feasibility studies followed by the creation of a project plan, and the development of a Blockchain application or a rigorous theoretical analysis.

With this programme, you’ll gain hands-on experience and develop practical skills that will help you stand out in the job market. The faculty at DCU includes experts in the field and you’ll have access to state-of-the-art technology and resources. While continuous assessment elements for the modules will be submitted electronically, there will also be end-of-term examinations for which attendance in person at DCU is required.

Asynchronous Delivery

This course is delivered asynchronously using the Futurelearn platform, which means that the method of teaching is very different to teaching face to face in a classroom. All the course materials will be online for the students to work through at their own pace.

These course materials will be very interactive with frequent self-assessment milestones. There will also be some assessment deadlines which students will have to work to, as well as the exams in relevant modules at the end of each semester.

With the exception of the exams and the orientation session at the start of the academic year, there will be no need for students to come to campus at all. Synchronous sessions will be undertaken in both Semester 1 and Semester 2. These sessions will reinforce the supports available to students.

The course is aimed at IT professionals in employment in Republic of Ireland registered companies. To qualify for direct entry they must have a Level 8 Honours Degree (2.2) or higher in Computer Science, Computing, Computer Applications or a related discipline.

Applicants without these entry requirements (e.g., Level 7 degree or lower than an Honours 2.2 in a Level 8 degree) may be considered if they can demonstrate previously obtained competence equivalent to the entry requirements.

**Eligible candidates can avail of the part-funded fees which reduce the cost to €2,950 per annum.  Eligible candidates are those awarded a place by the college AND who are working in private or commercial semi-state organisations in Republic of Ireland.
