Tips for Studying from Home

tips for studying from home

As the Covid- 19 pandemic forces schools and universities to close, students must learn to adapt to the new online learning norm. Although studying from the comfort of your own home may sound like a piece of cake, it can in fact be filled with distractions that make it hard to concentrate. You want to be sure to optimise your home study time and avoid giving in to the need to procrastinate. To enhance learning during the lockdown – we have prepared the following top tips to help you achieve your academic goals, even while stuck at home.

Build Routine

Set yourself up a daily routine and bring structure into your home life. Don’t sleep until midday, be sure to get up at a reasonable hour (you’ve already gained extra time in bed by cutting out your daily commute – no need to get carried away with yourself) Whatever time you plan to get up or take study breaks, be consistent and follow the same schedule every day. Structure and routine will help you to better use your time and achieve more in that time!

Take Breaks

Sometimes it may feel like there is no time to take a break or you’re better off to keep going while you’re on a roll with a topic… this is a common mistake! Breaks are an essential part of the process as they allow you to take a quick breather and avoid a burnout. You have to think of it like a marathon, if you go hell for leather from the first bell you’re going to deplete your energy, motivation and more than likely hit a mental wall before ever making it to the finish line. There is still plenty of time to prepare for exams – whenever they might be – so structure your days to make the most out of them.

Screen Time

With remote lessons being delivered online becoming the new norm it’s important to be conscious of the amount of screen time you have every day. From scrolling social media to gaming or watching Netflix in your free time it can already be a large amount of screen time. Once you bring the hours of study time into the mix your screen time is going to be doubled. Don’t overdo it! Be aware of how long you’ve been staring at the screen and give your eyes a break from time to time. Try to break it up, for example, if you’re studying online don’t just switch over to YouTube when it’s time to take a break. The best thing you could do for yourself is to take a real breather- switch off and get some fresh air!

Self Care

If you want to perform to the best of your ability, you need to be treating yourself right. Look after yourself and don’t let the stress get the better of you! Be sure to keep up with physical exercise, practising meditation or mindfulness and fuel your body with healthy and nutritious foods. Good nutrition has numerous benefits, including helping you to concentrate better! Also, now more than ever personal hygiene is super important, so keep on top of it and keep yourself feeling clean and fresh.

Sleep

Sleeping well is so beneficial and essential in helping your body recover. Not only does it help you keep your body healthy it also helps fight disease. Everyone has a bad nights sleep now and then and you know just how much that can impact everything you do the following day. But a good nights sleep allows you to perform well as it aids concentration and enhances learning. You really can’t beat a good nights sleep! Try switching off screens an hour or two before you go to bed, don’t bring your phone or device with you, have a relaxing bath, skip the coffee, try meditating – all these things will help you sleep better.
